The Linkwylan® FTPS series of RJ45 field termination plug is an eight-position, eight-contact (8P8C) modular connector engineered for on-site termination of twisted-pair cabling without the need for specialized crimping tools. Unlike conventional factory-terminated plugs, field termination plugs employ a lacing-cap style termination mechanism that accommodates solid or stranded conductors through insulation displacement contacts (IDCs), enabling installers to create reliable Modular Plug Terminated Links (MPTL) directly in the field.
The defining characteristic of field termination plugs is their modular IDC termination architecture. Conductors are seated into a wire cap or lacing sled with color-coded slots per T568A/T568B wiring schemes, then pressed into place using finger force or a simple closing mechanism. The IDCs pierce the conductor insulation to establish electrical contact, while an integrated printed circuit board (PCB) within the plug body provides signal compensation and crosstalk reduction—a feature absent from standard crimp-style plugs.
This design eliminates the precision requirements of conventional crimping, where improper tool usage or insufficient compression can lead to conductor pull-out or failed wiremap tests. Many field termination plugs support re-termination multiple times, allowing correction of wiring errors without discarding the connector.

Performance Categories and Compatibility
Field termination plugs are available across performance grades. Cat5e versions support 100 MHz for Gigabit Ethernet applications. Cat6 plugs rated to 250 MHz accommodate 10GBASE-T over limited distances. Cat6A variants support 500 MHz for full 10 Gigabit Ethernet channels, with some models tested to 625 MHz. These plugs typically accept 22–26 AWG solid and stranded conductors, accommodating cable outer diameters from approximately 5.5 mm to 8.5 mm.
Shielded variants feature die-cast zinc or metal housings with 360° shield continuity, providing protection against alien crosstalk (AXT) and electromagnetic interference while helping dissipate heat generated by Power over Ethernet applications. Unshielded versions offer a cost-effective alternative for less demanding environments.
Standards and Applications
Field termination plugs are designed to meet or exceed ANSI/TIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801 component and channel requirements, with many products supporting PoE/PoE+ (IEEE 802.3af/at) and PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt Type 3/4) applications up to 100 watts. The MPTL link model, formally recognized in ANSI/TIA-568.2-D Annex F, specifies field-terminated plugs for connecting horizontal cabling directly to endpoint devices without an intervening outlet and patch cord.
Typical applications include wireless access points, IP security cameras, PoE lighting, access control devices, and network-attached AV equipment—installations where direct plug termination to the device reduces connection points, lowers link cost, and simplifies deployment. Angled variants facilitate installation in space-constrained enclosures where straight plugs cannot be accommodated.
