Product Highlights

The Linkwylan® RJ45 EZ-type pass-through modular plug is a specialized 8-position, 8-contact (8P8C) connector designed to simplify and accelerate the termination of unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) and shielded twisted-pair (STP) copper cabling. Its defining feature is a pass-through (feed-through) body that allows the individual conductors to extend fully through the front of the plug, enabling visual verification of correct wire sequencing before the crimp is applied.

Construction and Contact Design
The plug housing is typically molded from transparent polycarbonate rated UL 94V-2, allowing full visibility of conductor routing during termination. Contacts are manufactured from phosphor bronze and plated with gold—commonly 15, 30, or 50 micro-inches—over nickel to ensure stable signal transmission and resistance to oxidation. The insulation displacement contacts (IDC) pierce the conductor insulation when the plug is crimped, establishing a gas-tight electrical connection.

Unlike conventional plugs, the pass-through design features open-ended contact channels that guide each conductor through the plug body and out the front face. This eliminates the need to precisely pre-cut conductors to length and reduces the risk of miswiring, since the wire order can be confirmed at a glance before crimping.

Termination Process and Tooling
Termination requires a dedicated pass-through crimp tool equipped with a built-in blade that simultaneously crimps the contacts and trims the excess conductors flush with the plug face. This single-step operation produces a clean, finished termination without the need for separate trimming. The process is faster and significantly less error-prone than conventional termination, making it well suited to high-volume production and field installations where consistency is critical.

Features

 Performance Categories and Compatibility

EZ-type pass-through plugs are available in performance grades aligned with cabling categories. Cat5e versions support frequencies up to 100 MHz for Gigabit Ethernet. Cat6 plugs are rated to 250 MHz, supporting 10GBASE-T over limited distances. Cat6A variants support 500 MHz for full 10 Gigabit Ethernet channels. The plug category must match or exceed that of the cable being terminated, as overall channel performance is limited by the lowest-rated component.

Cable Compatibility
These plugs accommodate round UTP and STP cable with conductor sizes typically ranging from 23 to 28 AWG and outer jacket diameters up to approximately 8.5 mm. They are available in versions optimized for solid or stranded conductors, and some models include an integrated strain-relief boot or snagless design to protect the locking tab during installation and use.

Standards and Applications
RJ45 EZ-type pass-through modular plugs are designed to meet the requirements of ANSI/TIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801 generic cabling standards. They support voice, data, and video services, and are suitable for PoE and PoE+ applications. Typical applications include structured cabling installations, patch cord assembly, data center interconnects, and premise network deployments where speed, reliability, and consistent termination quality are essential.
